Portsmouth started solidly and despite having less of the ball looked comfortable in their defensive shape. Not long after, the visitors opened the scoring after a long corner was deflected into the D falling for Euan Rixon to slot in with a well-placed reverse stick strike. In a first half that offered few chances for either side, the university were able to level from a breakaway not long before half time after some loose marking from Portsmouth.
Entering the second half, Portsmouth again looked to make the most of limited opportunities to attack with industrious work from Jack Boswell frequently breaking down attacks. The university, however, went ahead following a short corner strike past star cricketer Jez Bulled on the line who would be disappointed to miss a ball that would routinely have been stroked through cover point during the cricket season. A second short corner was scored soon after putting the home team 3-1 ahead. Portsmouth did have opportunities to get back into the game with a guilt edged opportunity being spurned by Chris Bollom before a lack of direction from Pete Hayward at the top of the D wasted a late short corner chance.
The visitors were disappointed to leave with nothing but with a full squad expected for the home game against Hamble next weekend, Portsmouth will be fully expecting to kick the season into gear.
