We played some really nice hockey in the first half, moving the ball well and opened Windsor up several times.
Despite conceding a goal, Pompey bounced back into the lead with 2 strikes. The first was pounced on by the alert Mark Wilson and then a flick in from Tim Schofield, after a fierce shot from Karlos Young was initially saved by the keeper.
The second half started brightly for Portsmouth but all too often we squandered possession cheaply and Windsor gradually took a hold of the game. Some missed opportunities for Portsmouth to go 3-1 up, proved costly in the last quarter.
Windsor’s 5 or 6 subs were key to the home side finishing the stronger with Pompey only managing to bring one sub, who was carrying an injury. The pressure told and Windsor equalised with 10 minutes to go from a well worked move going in high off the post.
Portsmouth were hanging on and the game became a bit feisty, leading to the umpires speaking to both captains. A mix-up in defence for a late short corner, where nobody ran out gave the home side a free shot at goal, which they duly converted for a 3-2 win.
There were a couple of incidents worth a special mention.
1. Mark Wheeler was called over by the umpire and asked if he would like a card, to which he replied “Not today, thank you”.
2. The second involved a bit of argy-bargy with Paul Witcher, who stood his ground to bundle over his attacker and threw a hockey stick at him for good measure. This earned Paul DoD.
3. Other nominees for DoD were: Dave Simmons for nearly leaving Colin Falla behind at Broad Oak and Colin Falla for passing more times to the opposition than his own team mates.
MoM was Mike Elliott for his all round effort and fine performance in central midfield.
